Must Have Wordpress Plugins

Here is my continually updated list of plugins that are a ‘must have’ for any Internet marketer:

Spam Control

Akismet – Checks comments with a third party blog service to evaluate whether they are spam or not.  This may be the most popular Wordpress anti-spam plugin.  It does a decent job, although it still allows a lot of spam.  A problem is that it allows comments, and although it does not post them, you still have to manually wade through a lot of crap to find good comments.

Bad Behavior – Checks visitors to your website against known spam techniques, such as robots missing a header, proxies, etc.  Blocks spammers before they can even leave a comment, so there is less for Akismet to even check.  If you get a lot of spam you’ll love Bad Behavior.

Ping Control

Ping Optimizer by MaxBlogPress lets you control how many ‘pings’ you make in a certain period of time.  Each time you edit a post you send a ping.  That may be fine, unless you make a lot of edits in a short of period of time.  Then you risk getting your website banned for abusing the service.  Ping Optimizer prevents that.  You can manually ping anytime you want, and set the plugin, for example, to only allow one ping to be made from your blog every half hour.

Administration

All in One SEO – create default seo terms for your posts and pages.

Advertising Manager
– Useful for organizing and easily placing different ads, including Adsense and CPA offers.

To place ads inside posts you will need to have your post editor set to html instead of WYSIWYG. To have different ads rotate in the same place on a page, give both of them the same name.

Optional:

Super Cache – if you have a busy blog the Super Cache plugin will make your blog load faster, and reduce the load on your server. The plugin converts WordPress files to html files which are delivered faster since php and database accesses are not required. How ‘busy’ is ‘busy’? With one of our blogs when we hit 2000 hits per hour HostGator requested that this plugin be installed.

The Super Cache plugin is not always compatible with other plugins, such as bad behavior. So unless you blog is extremely busy, this may not be necessary. Also, when testing your blog having a cache on can be a big pain since you don’t always see recent changes.

RSS Includes Pages – by default your RSS feed only includes your posts, not any pages. This plugin will include your pages within the RSS feed.

Note: You must have a post to activate this plugin. If you only have pages then nothing will appear in your RSS feed.

Viper’s Video Quicktags – the quickest and easiest way to display YouTube videos on your blog.

Exec-PHP – execute php code within your posts and pages. Requires use of the html editor and not WYSIWYG. A similar plugin, which I am testing now, called PHP Execution, says it allow execution of php within Wordpress pages without turning off the visual editor.

Wordpress Subdomains – Great for keyword SEO, point pages and categories to different subdomains, all administered from your Wordpress panel

ZdStatistics – Nice, easy to use statistics plugin that is very flexible. While I normally use the Awstats available in cpanel to get critical information such as keywords people use to find the website, or even Google Analytics – this plugin is better. Here’s why: in Awstats the stats are only available for subdomain. So if you are using the Wordpress Subdomains plugin you have to check every single subdirectory stats. There is no overall – here is all the traffic to the domain irrespective of the subdomain. While I’ve tried Google Analytics to get around this problem, I surprisingly found it to only have OK information. And then of course, there is the information of giving so information to Google and relying on it, which is not a good idea. Lose a Google account and you’ve lost all your data. To solve these problems and see you stats from within your blog admin panel, get this plugin.

Back Linking

OnlyWire – make it easy for others to include a link to your site at numerous social bookmarking places.

Link to this Page
– give visitors a link to your page they can copy to include in their web page, blog, or forum post.

Note: when searching for this plugin, it is all one word: linktothispage

Copy the code below to your web site.
